Bella’s attempt to obtain a clitoridectomy

Poor Things

Bella Baxter / Victoria McCandless’s attempt to obtain a clitoridectomy exposes the medical and marital constraints surrounding her life with General Sir Aubrey de la Pole Blessington. After repeated hysterical pregnancies, she seeks an operation her husband wants for her; Godwin Baxter warns that it cannot address the harm she has suffered, while also admitting that he cannot offer her a practical escape from the marriage.

Circumstances and Request

Six months after her wedding, Bella experiences her third hysterical pregnancy and begs for a clitoridectomy. Dr. Prickett tells her that a skilled Scottish surgeon is in London and might perform the operation. Her request is thus not simply a consultation she initiates: the General wants the procedure, and Dr. Prickett believes it may help her.

Baxter’s Intervention

Godwin Baxter visits after Dr. Prickett has raised the prospect of the operation. He asks Bella why she wants it, then questions the explanation she gives, which includes her childhood, schooling, and marriage. Baxter understands the request against a longer history of treatment by men who have shaped her life. He tells her that the operation will not help and says he will convey his view to Dr. Prickett, though he expects the doctor not to accept it. His intervention gives Bella access to a judgment that her previous education and experience have not allowed her to trust on her own.

The Limits of Rescue

Bella weeps with grief and gratitude: Baxter’s account confirms what she had long felt but could not know until someone said it plainly. She asks where she can go if she stays with her husband and fears being driven mad. Baxter answers that leaving would be suicidal without a friend to shelter her, money, or experience earning it, and says he cannot help her. The encounter therefore offers recognition without immediate deliverance. The operation remains a proposed remedy rather than an accomplished procedure, while Bella’s dependence on her husband makes refusal or escape materially difficult.
